Company Profile

Morning Star Quilts is a small company located in Upstate New York that has been in existence since 1985.

I started quilting because my sister asked me for a burgundy quilt for her bed!  My question for her was, "a what for what"?  Since I made some of my own clothes and I liked to sew, I'm sure she thought this wouldn't be a challenge for me. So, I read books and even took a class, which was all hand piecing. Well, I never did a thing in the class.  I went every week, I purchased fabric, I listened, but I never cut a piece of the fabric nor hand stitched a thing!

Later that year I figured I could layer cut triangles and squares.  I also figured I could use the sewing machine to make this quilt.  Well, the finished product was far from perfect but some of the seams and points matched and my sister loved it. Guess that's all that counts.  Then I heard of a class where you make a quilt using templates, rotary cutters and the sewing machine. What a thrill this class was.  I finished the class with a queen sized quilt top completed. I then made a queen one for my Mother for Christmas that same year-- both were hand quilted--I must have been crazy!  It is now twenty years later I am still hooked on quilting.

My passion was to teach beginners the correct way to make a quilt. I wanted to let them know that they can pick up a book and make the quilt on the cover. I wanted to let them make mistakes on my fabric at a sewing machine before they even cut their own fabric. We all had lots of fun and some of my students are now quilt teachers!

Now I'm into making functional "things" -- Micro Mitts, available in all designs and colors, keep you from burning your fingers on the hot dish from the microwave.  There's a rubber grip on the palm of the Mitt -- really neat stuff.  Quillows get your feet warm so you can relax after a hard days work. Put the quilt over you, stick your feet in the pocket, and take that nap. Washes easy, dries fast. Great for home or traveling.  Pine Bags for the smell of the great outdoors inside your closets or drawers.  Cedar Bags to ward off the moths and make those "smelly" drawers fresh again.

My spare time is spent working 20 hours at my church running the office and spending time at our family cottage on Blind Sodus Bay near Fair Haven NY.  It really is a "haven" -- Mark 6:30-32 tells us to "come with Him by yourself to a quiet place and get some rest." That's what our cottages are -- a haven.

Thanks for looking at my site and I hope you see something that you just need to purchase.

Blessing to you,

Nancy
